Staying Safe & Healthy This Summer: Tips for Seniors
Summer in Central Ohio is a great time to get outside — but it also brings risks for seniors. Compassionate Caregivers Home Care and Transportation are here to help you stay safe, comfortable, and connected.
1. Hydration is Key
As we age, our sense of thirst can decrease, but our need for hydration does not. Drink 6–8 glasses of water each day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Include hydrating foods like watermelon, cucumbers, and popsicles made with real juice.
2. Time Your Outings
Try to schedule outdoor activities in the early morning or late afternoon, when temperatures are cooler and the sun’s rays are less intense. If you’re using our transportation service for outings, we’ll gladly help plan a time that works safely for you.
3. Dress for the Weather
Loose, lightweight, and light-colored clothing is best for hot days. Don’t forget a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to protect your face and eyes from UV rays.
4. Use Sunscreen
Even a short time in the sun can lead to sunburn. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, and reapply every two hours when outdoors — more often if you’re sweating.
5. Rest Often
Heat can be exhausting. Whether you’re gardening, enjoying a community event, or attending a family barbecue, remember to take breaks in the shade or indoors where it’s cooler.
6. Stay in Touch
Extreme heat can be dangerous — especially if you live alone. Keep your phone charged, within reach, and don’t hesitate to ask for help. Our caregivers and drivers are always just a call away.

The Critical Role of
Medication Management
This Summer
Medication management is one of the most important (and often overlooked) aspects of home care during summer. As schedules shift, families travel, and heat affects the body’s chemistry, staying on top of medications becomes even more important.
Many of our clients take multiple prescriptions, each with its timing, dosage, and possible side effects. Missing a dose or taking medications incorrectly can lead to serious health consequences, including hospitalization.
Compassionate Caregivers is unique in the fact that, along with our home care services, we can offer skilled nursing as well.
Our licensed nursing professionals can:
- Provide daily medication reminders
- Assist with pill organization (like filling pill boxes)
- Monitor for side effects or changes in condition
- Coordinate with family members and medical professionals when needed
This extra level of support gives peace of mind to both clients and their loved ones — especially when family members are busy or live out of town.

Caregiver Spotlight

Deborah
For over 4½ years, Deborah has brought warmth and dedication to Compassionate Caregivers. She became a caregiver to make a real difference—and she does, one client at a time.
“What I love most is providing comfort and connection to those who feel isolated,” Deborah shares. “It’s more than just a job — it’s a powerful and intimate relationship that brings real joy and purpose.”
One special moment was helping a client enjoy their backyard again by working with the family to install a ramp, restoring access to nature.
To Deborah, caregiving is rewarding, teaching gratitude, kindness, and empathy every day. She values the supportive team environment that helps her grow and do her best. When she’s not caring for others, you might find her teaching CPR, line dancing, or enjoying her favorite summer treat—Butter Pecan ice cream.
Driver Spotlight

Troy
At Compassionate Care Transportation, great service begins with drivers who truly care—and Troy is a perfect example. For over a year, his steady presence and quiet dedication have made a lasting impact. With a love for driving and helping others, Troy brings compassion to every ride.
What he values most is getting clients to their destinations safely and on time—but his care goes beyond the driver’s seat. In one memorable moment, he noticed a client’s family member struggling to get into the van. Though she declined help, Troy stayed close. When she lost her balance, he quickly stepped in to assist. It’s that kind of quiet, proactive care that sets him apart..
When asked what sets Compassionate Care Transportation apart, Troy says compassion isn’t just a word—it’s a daily practice. Care extends to both clients and employees, creating a supportive culture. And on his breaks, you might find Troy enjoying his favorite grapenut ice cream before getting back on the road with kindness and reliability.
